About
During my internship on the FIDO team at LexisNexis Risk Solutions, I built a custom internal reporting system to help engineering leadership understand how time and effort were distributed across Jira tickets and projects. By turning raw worklog data into a dynamic Power BI dashboard, the tool made it easier to plan resources, track performance, and spot bottlenecks — improving how engineering teams worked across the org.
The Challenge
Engineering managers had no easy way to see how teams were allocating time or progressing across multiple projects. They relied heavily on static reports, outdated spreadsheets, or manually pulling Jira exports — none of which showed the full picture. The data was there, but messy, fragmented, and hard to trust. My job was to clean it up, connect the dots, and turn it into something decision-makers could actually use.
My Role
I owned both the backend logic and front-end reporting experience for a new internal analytics system that helped leadership understand how engineering time was being spent across projects.
This involved:
Modeling and transforming raw Jira data from SQL Server into structured, reliable performance metrics
Developing interactive Power BI dashboards to visualize team capacity, project timelines, and individual workload trends
Collaborating with PMs and engineering leads to define useful metrics and ensure insights were both accurate and actionable
What I Did
Data Discovery
Scoped reporting needs with project managers, identifying key metrics like FTE ratios, logged hours, ticket volume, and team hierarchy breakdowns.
Dug into raw Jira exports stored in SQL Server — working with noisy, non-normalized datasets of time logs and ticket metadata.
Data Modeling & Transformation
Wrote complex SQL queries to join and normalize multiple Jira data tables.
Mapped individual employees to their managers and teams to show hierarchy-based summaries.
Built temporal aggregations (daily, weekly, monthly) and calculated derived metrics like velocity and utilization.
Data Validation & QA
Implemented data integrity checks (e.g. flagging negative logs, validating transitions).
Cross-checked outputs with my mentor and handled edge cases to build stakeholder trust in the reports.
Dashboard Design & UX
Designed a multi-tiered Power BI dashboard:
Team View: Track overall project timelines, ticket throughput, and utilization trends.
Employee Drilldowns: Review individual contributions and hours logged, broken down by day or task.
Ticket-Level Analysis: Spot issues, track progress, and view worklog comments and status history.
Added date filters and dynamic views to support ad hoc queries from leadership.
Impact
The tool transformed how leadership viewed productivity — replacing manual tracking with a flexible, real-time dashboard. It surfaced patterns like team overwork, underutilized contributors, or slow-moving tickets early, allowing managers to adjust plans proactively.
By treating data like a product, I helped make operational metrics understandable and actionable for non-technical stakeholders — improving clarity, accountability, and team performance.
Result: The project was nominated for outstanding intern presentation and adopted as part of the team's internal reporting suite.
